Muzaffargarh: Laying the foundation to build a better community, Pakpur Foundation's model settlement Pakpur Noorghazi is more than a residential project. The Indus floods that left thousands of people homeless also stripped them of their livelihoods. Pakpur did more than give these people shelter; they gave them the tools they needed to rebuild their lives. Involved in the actual construction and setup of their community, the residents of Pakpur Noorghazi feel an ownership towards this project and actively work on developing their lifestyle. The community is organised to be completely self-sustained, even in matters of trade, and has a committee to govern its affairs. It possesses its own water, uses solar power and each household grows its own greens. All the children attend the community school while impoverished adults attend a vocational institute that teaches them the skills they need to increase their income. The community employs its own doctor and nurse and has a free medicine dispensary courtesy of Pakpur Foundation. Above all, the members of Pakpur Noorghazi have a system to generate large sums of money for their communal account, released in parts to families who are in need of extra money. If all the neighbourhoods in Pakistan exercised this brotherhood, no person would walk alone.
